Originally recorded as one long Japan On Fire 19, it is now re-edited into a shorter episode and second half of the long recording will feature in Japan On Fire 20.
This is part 2 of our series on director Sabu after covering his first two movies Dangan Runner and Postman Blues in episode 18 of Japan On Fire. His characters ran and rode on bikes amidst droll, quirky and absurd humour as well as drama in the first two and not a lot changes as we look at Monday from 2000. Does Sabu still evolve though? ‘Three reports in and we’re still playing with the format, mixing and matching and certainly not setting any cut off point in terms of a movie being too old. Just have to be fairly new so for this episode, you’ll be hearing Paul Fox, Dr. David Lam and Kenny B talk The White Haired Witch Of Lunar Kingdom from 2014 and Floating City from 2012. One might or might not be a totally unneccssary re-thread of the novel The Bride With White Hair was based on (and it might even be a close remake) and the other is Aaaron Kwok putting away the outlandishly colored pants in favour of acting. Video removed since Vimeo (who allow tags involving sexually suggestive content) removed my account. Despite no nudity in any reviews of Category III movies, it’s not worth the headache to repost old and new reviews on another service. Original posts in the Past Sleaze and Sleazy K’s Video Reviews-categories will remain as they do link to the written review but video content will be removed and any future Category III related reviews won’t have an accompanying video review.
As one review hinted at, on this show we don’t pick the expected but rather what WE feel is worthy of a spotlight and the time has come for a new subject. His name is David Chiang. Yes, martial arts action superstar had a directing career so follow Kenny B and Tom K-W as we open up a new Director’s Series on David Chiang’s The Drug Addicts and A Mad World Of Fools. Podcast On Fire may focus on the known and the big guns out of Hong Kong cinema, classics or not, but no one’s demanding the programming to be strict or they’ll tune out so for this episode, based on the suggestion of our guest, we switch it up and head to part of the Hollywood filmography of a Hong Kong director. Namely John Woo and his third outing in America from 1997 called Face/Off. For our second review, we’re following among other things an actor on top of his game but not quite ready to be embraced by the public. Still, didn’t stop awards juries from giving Chow Yun-fat accolades for his performance in Leung Po-chih’s 1984 war drama Hong Kong 1941. With Kenny B and special guest Dr. Stan Glick. Taiwan cinema mixing it up: Supernatural, comedic shenanigans, a little bit of heart, martial arts and gunplay.

It’s time Taiwan Noir took a step back to Taiwan cinema swordplay or Wuxia pian. They had some juice, some fuel that could stack up with what Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest were doing despite being the little kid in terms of size of industry and maybe even means. So Kenny B and Todd Stadtman therefore talk Ting Shan-hsi’s The Ghost Hill and Chen Hung-min’s The Fly Dragon Mountain for this episode. Click image or link below to access the show!
